Costa Rica Incredible Under the Radar Vacation Spots in Costa Rica

THERE’S A TROUBLING FACT you might not be aware of: Americans leave 500 million perfectly good vacation days unused every year. Do your part to help end this plight — don’t waste even a single one of your precious days off sitting at home or (gasp!) at work, when you could be spending it in a place like Costa Rica.

https://www.friendstravel.com/contact.html

But when you #VisitCostaRica with #FriendsTravelWestHollywoodCA90069 , you don’t have to hit the same spots as everyone else. Here are some roads less traveled in Costa Rica that deserve more attention.

1. #Montezuma

#Montezuma used to be nothing more than a tiny fishing village, but those days are long gone. Its beaches now play host to a hippie/boho scene, made up of both locals and foreigners.

The town’s location on the southeastern cusp of the #NicoyaPeninsula means finding your way here is half the fun. You can get to Jacó by bus, and from there it’s an hour-long water taxi ride straight to Montezuma beach (the boat actually leaves from Herradura, just north of Jacó). You can also make the two-hour drive from San José to Puntarenas and its ferry terminal, from where you catch the ferry to Paquera. Once in Paquera, drive another hour through Tambor beach, Cobano, and then finally on a gravel road to Montezuma. (Yes, there’s also a pretty cheap 25-minute flight from San Jose to Tambor, but that’s copping out on adventure.) We offer first class motorcoach with facilities!

Montezuma is bordered by several miles of rugged coastline and puts on some pretty epic nightlife — the fun certainly doesn’t end after you stow your surfboard for the day. Just outside of town there’s a gorgeous 80ft waterfall with excellent swimming holes, and natural hot springs are also nearby. The only problem with Montezuma is coming down from the high long enough to see what else Costa Rica has to offer.

2. San Gerardo de Dota

With nearly 1,000 miles of coastline touching two oceans, Costa Rica understandably draws a lot of people looking to take advantage of its beaches and waves. But not everyone heads to Costa Rica to surf. #SanGerardoDeDota, for instance, situated in the #SavegreRiverValley of the #TalamancaCordillera, is all about birdwatching. While its south-central location provides easy access to #LosQuetzalesNationalPark, heavy tourism hasn’t quite caught up.

Almost 200 bird species have been identified in the misty forests of this region — including a variety of #hummingbirds, #woodpeckers, and #tanagers — but the indisputable star of the place is the #resplendent #quetzal, which hangs out in the San Gerardo de Dota area year-round.

From #LuxuryVillas to simple #MountainLodges, most accommodations here offer some pretty Instagram-worthy views of green rolling hills and fruit plantations. And if you wind up in San Gerardo de Dota and aren’t into birds, there’s always trout #fishing on the #RioSavegre, tours of the nearby coffee plantation, or trips to #NaranjoWaterfalls.

3. Chirripó National Park

Home to #CerroChirripó, Costa Rica’s highest peak (12,533ft), this national park was pretty much made for hikers and climbers. On a clear day, you can see both the #Pacific and the #Caribbean from the #summit.

Besides the challenge of ascending #Chirripó, there are numerous #trail systems that wind through more #ecological zones than you’ll find in the entirety of most countries. Climb from pastures near San Gerardo de Rivas (don’t miss the hot springs there, just a 15-minute walk north of the ranger station) to rainforest, to forests of ancient oaks that tower over 150 feet, to the tundra ecosystem near the peak… All of this rich diversity keeps armies of biologists busy for a lifetime.

The summit climb is 11 miles with nearly 10,000 feet of elevation gain, but there’s a refugio a half kilometer from the top where you can spend the night and start your descent the next morning. Camping is not allowed, and you’ll need to make a reservation at the refugio through the park system. While Easter and certain weekends in the dry season can get crowded, at any other time of year you shouldn’t see many other tourists. #Experience of a #Lifetime

4. Turrialba and the Pacuare

There’s no better way to take in the #grandeur of the #mountains, #canyons, and #waterfalls of the #RioPacuare than by #raft. The river is ranked by #NationalGeographic as one of the top 10 for #whitewater #rafting in the world, and there are tour operators and sections of the river to accommodate every ability level. While you may be a little busy managing the rapids, you’ll likely catch glimpses of numerous #birds and #monkeys along the way.

If rafting isn’t your thing, the nearby town of #Turrialba is still a great spot to post up for a while. It’s also the place to arrange a tour of the ruins at #Guayabo. This is one of Costa Rica’s only pre-Columbian site that’s open to the public, and can give you an impression of what life must have been like here circa 1000 BC to 1400 AD.

Note: #VolcánTurrialba erupted in October, 2014, so for the moment Turrialba Volcano National Park may be closed. Its #JurassicPark-like slopes can still be admired from a safe distance, though.

5. Manzanillo

A green and black poison dart frog (Dendrobates auratus) For those really looking to get off the beaten track, the village of #Manzanillo will definitely suffice. The small town marks the end of the road that runs south along #CostaRica’s #Caribbean coast, and that road was only paved for the first time in 2003.

But who needs to stop there! YOU! There’s a solid 10 miles of #unspoiled #coastline between the end of the road and the border with #Panama. For a real #adventure, hire a local guide to take you beyond the village and along the shore into #Gandoca #Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge. A half-day round-trip hike will get you to lovely #PuntaMona.

Further southeast and deep in the reserve, you can also check out the village of #Gandoca, which is reached from the main inland highway via 4×4 or boat. This little town holds tightly to its Afro-Caribbean culture. While you won’t come across any fancy boutique hotels, you will find friendly Costa Ricans throwing the occasional party at the local bar, and new friends who may invite you to snorkel or kayak. It’s the kind of under-the-radar trip that will give you a new understanding of the Tico spirit and its #PuraVida.

Star Clippers Urges Guests to Walk on the Wild Side in Costa Rica

With more than half a million species of flora and fauna inhabiting its lush tropical forests, Costa Rica is easily one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. A land of volcanoes, rain and cloud forests, towering waterfalls and mighty rivers, Costa Rica embodies a wild nature that begs to be uncovered. Beginning Nov. 2022, Star Clippers will offer travelers an effortless way to explore this spectacular country via tall ship, with ports of call along the Pacific coast as well as in Nicaragua and Panama.
To entice guests to book their Costa Rican sailing now, Star Clippers is offering an air credit discount of $1,200 off per cabin on select seven-night sailings departing November 2022 through March 2023. The discount is based on double occupancy cabins and sailings must be booked by Sept. 20, 2021. The offer is valid for residents of North, Central and South America only.

Sailing along the western coast of Costa Rica is the ideal way to experience all this diverse country has to offer. Below are just a few examples of the “wild” experiences waiting for guests on a Star Clippers Costa Rica sailing.

Walk on the Wild Side: Opportunities to immerse oneself in the flora and fauna of Costa Rica abound on Star Clippers’ sailings. The small port town of Quepos acts as gateway to the magnificent Manuel Antonio National Park consisting of tropical rainforests and more than one thousand different species of flora. Guests can hike the short trail from the white-sand beaches into the hills where three-toed sloths are visible over cecropia trees, troops of squirrel monkeys feed busily on many of green and black grasshoppers, and nearly 450 species of bird flit between the treetops. In Golfito, the Wildlife Refuge inside a primary rain forest boasts more than 125 species of trees, 31 species of orchid and more than 12 different species of ferns to explore. Add to this the 300 species of birdlife, 139 species of mammal and more than 200 species of amphibians and reptiles that call the park home and it’s easy to see why this park is a magnet for scientific tourism.

Dive Deep or Go Shallow: Costa Rica’s Isla Tortuga is a dreamy island paradise fringed with tall coconut palms, sugary white sand beaches and emerald waters. A big attraction to this exotic island is its outstanding scuba diving sites and excellent snorkeling opportunities to view marine life such as sting rays, angel fish, sharks, Spinner dolphins and octopus. #StarClippers’ complimentary water sports program allows guests to borrow snorkeling equipment for the duration of the sailing, which they can use to their hearts content. Adventurous travelers can hike the mountain trails to the tip of the island to see the local fauna and flora of the island, including the peccary (small pigs) that make this island so memorable.

Get Some Coastal Perspective: The Pacific coastline of Costa Rica, known for its rugged and varied topography with dense jungle giving way to idyllic hidden beaches, is one of the many natural assets that draw visitors to the country’s shores. Some of the best views of these incredible vistas can be had from the deck of a tall ship as it sails along the picturesque coast. Relaxing in the bowsprit netting—a hammock-like area stretching 30 feet forward of the bow where guests can lay suspended over the ocean—provides guests with one of the most unique and exciting settings from which to take in the scenery. And for the ultimate long view, brave guests are invited climb the ship’s rigging to the crow’s nest—located almost 100 feet in the air.

For more than 25 years, Star Clippers has been introducing travelers to the thrill of modern tall ship sailing to remote ports in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore. The company operates three of the world’s largest and tallest sailing vessels: Star Clipper and Star Flyer are traditional clipper ships with modern amenities carrying 170 guests, while the 227-guest Royal Clipper holds the Guinness World Record for being the largest and only five-masted, full-rigged sailing ship in service today. All three ships have expansive teak decks, swimming pools, informal dining, convivial tropical bars on deck and piano lounges.

A professional six-star staff will provide you with distinguished service at this premier and exclusive private compound. The five staff members will serve your every need including a bilingual American concierge.

Renowned Costa Rican architect, Ronald Zurcher (perhaps best known for his design of Costa Rica’s only Four Seasons Hotel) designed this private compound which is made up of three gorgeous guest rooms on the first level, with a palatial master suite on the second level. Every room offers breathtaking ocean views.

Enjoy a workout, yoga or massage in the gym that is strategically placed on top of a dramatic 100 yard high cliff top perch that allows for unobstructed 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean. The spacious living room merges seamlessly with the elegant dining room. Both rooms offer sweeping ocean views with an easy indoor/outdoor flow to the terrace and pool/spa/bar area. And a little tropical rain might be the perfect time to enjoy the state-of-the-art home theater that has seating for 8 with over 200 channels of widescreen, high definition and movies from the U.S.A.

Explore one of Montezuma’s many dazzling beaches or visit Mal Pais for some world class surfing. Take a quad 15 minutes down the coastal road to Cabo Blanco, one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful nature preserves.

Or stay at home and enjoy the large free-form infinity pool with swim-up bar that seats 12, in and out of the water. Equipped with a 42 inch LCD screen, barbecue grill and a wood-fire pizza oven; this area is the center of outdoor entertainment at Villa Paraiso.

A 100 yard private suspension bridge was engineered to provide guests with a shortcut from the Villa to the bohemian streets of Montezuma, which is known for its striking natural surroundings and wildlife: Howler and white faced Capuchin monkeys and colorful iguanas which seem never more than a glance away. The restaurants and bars of Montezuma, jungle canopy tour, finest beaches, access to boating and big game fishing are all within walking distance from the Villa.

A day trip to Isla Tortuga for swimming and snorkeling among hundreds of colorful species of fish as well as whales, giant mantas, dolphins and sea turtles makes for a fun, relaxing and memorable day.

Pura Vida in Costa Rica

The name might mean Rich coast’, but Costa Rica has far more to offer than just warm beaches. In fact, most of my fondest memories of the country are of the people, wildlife, and cuisine. The general attitude of most ticos (the nickname for residents of the country) can be summed up in the country’s motto: ‘Pura Vida,’ which literally means ‘pure life.’ The meaning is closer to that of ‘hakuna matata,’ though, minus the singing warthog and meerkat (or perhaps replaced by an anteater and an agouti). It’s a refreshing and welcome change of pace from the hustle and bustle of American city life, and the perfect setting for an idyllic vacation.

I also found that the relaxing tone of the populous allowed me to better concentrate on the two things I’d come to Costa Rica for: to see all the animals I’d read about in books since I was a child, and to expand my palette. I wasn’t disappointed on either front, although some of my animal encounters of the six and eight-legged variety were a little too close for comfort! By far, my favorite area for wildlife viewing was Tortuguero, on the northern Caribbean coast. I’ve never seen so many different species of animals in one place! I truly felt like I was in a nature documentary when I was there. Between all of the sea birds, lizards, monkeys, bats, and other exotic creatures, I was in heaven. Seeing a toucan that wasn’t on a cereal box and standing close enough to a wild caiman that I could count its teeth were two things I never thought I’d get to do in my life.

For some reason tico cuisine sometimes gets a bad rep, but I think the people who complain had probably eaten in the wrong places.  I still have a ‘see-food’ diet, as in, when I see food, I eat it. I relish any opportunity to try local specialties that I can’t find some other places. My favorite culinary discovery in Costa Rica was maracuyá, or passionfruit. I’d order a maracuyá agua fresca, a fresh juice drink, everywhere I could. I also came to love all of the comida típica (typical food), but especially gallo pinto, a beans and rice dish eaten for breakfast.

All this talk of Costa Rica and comida típica is making me hungry for dinner and adventure! Although I’ve been to the country a few times, I hope to go back again to visit all of my amigos, to bask in the beauty of nature at its wildest, and of course to eat the delicious food.

Rainforest, Volcano & Beach
Combining three of our most popular destinations in Costa Rica: Tortuguero National Park, Arenal Volcano and Guanacaste beach area. One of our more well rounded and popular Costa Rican vacations.

A Bit of Eco-Tourism

Here as Independent Travelers we are reading more and more about eco-tourism in the news and hearing it more in conversations. There’s an ever-increasing amount of information available on what constitutes eco-tourism and what exactly it means. Sometimes it’s referred to as sustainable tourism or green tourism or even responsible tourism. Whichever term you want to use, many travelers are interested in reducing their impact on the land, supporting the local communities they are visiting and almost everyone seems to be responding to that demand.

So what’s an eco-tourist to do? Just pack their bags and head off to Costa Rica? That’s an option, certainly. With over 25% of its land dedicated to national parks and protecting 6% of the world’s biodiversity, there’s plenty for the eco-tourist to experience in Costa Rica. You’ve already read a bit about Tortuguero National Park with its turtles, manatees, and other wildlife. Another great feature is the majority of the day tours happen on the water, reducing the impact of tourism on land.

There’s also Monteverde Cloud Forest. The variety of birds and orchids alone make this a pretty spectacular place to visit. One of the impressive things about Monteverde is that it’s privately held by a non-profit organization and is not as susceptible to the flux in funding available for protection and conservation as the National Parks. Much like the Nature Conservancy in the US, it is controlled by a non-profit who safeguards the land and the ecology. Horseback riding in the clouds is one of those “must do” things!

Perhaps Costa Rica’s already been done and you are looking for something a bit more adventurous. We’ve got one word for you: Manu. It’s in Peru, so it would be simple to add this on to a trip to Cuzco and Machu Picchu.

The Manu National Park contains 1,000 species of birds, or one out of every nine on Earth. Approximately 550 bird species occur within a few square miles of lowland forest. But it’s not just the birds that are amazing; this densely populated area is home to some of the greatest biodiversity on the planet, including 10 species of monkeys along with some pretty awe-inspiring tree ferns and other plant life. All in all, this is probably the most adventurous type of eco-tourism for most travelers.

As we all move ahead, the landscape of traveling is changing, and eco-travel and responsible tourism options for travelers and vacationers will only grow. Hopefully, we all believe it’s good to see more people thinking about how, when and where they travel.
